June 2, 2017
Dear Wonderful Parents,
Here we are heading into our last week of the 2016-2017 school year. We can’t believe how quickly the year has passed and yet as we look at your children, we so very proud of all they have accomplished and grown this year. Please take a few minutes over the next few weeks to reflect with your child about their academic experiences and memories of this past year. There is much to be celebrated!
As we close out the school year, we’d like to thank you so much for all of your support and help throughout the year. Our program is only successful because of the partnership we share with every parent. So many of the things we are able to do are a direct result of parents willing to help out on a daily basis. Between chaperoning field trips, providing additional classroom materials, hosting study sessions, responding to emails, and a million things in between, your child’s success and growth this year is because of the GT Village! Thank you very much for all your contributions.
Returning students and families, please look for our summer mailer to arrive in your mailboxes shortly after the school year ends. Our weekly updates and monthly newsletters will resume in mid-August.
To our Rising High School Freshman: We wish you every success as you move on to your next adventure. Please know that anything worth earning will take time, diligence and hard-work. We know that you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to. Please keep us posted on your adventures, milestones, and achievements. We’ve loved being a part of your magnet experience and can’t wait to hear what happens next.
Next year, we will miss Mrs. Cabangon as she moves on to a new teaching assignment and Mrs. Taylor as she moves to a new city. They’ve brought so many talents to our program and have left an indelible mark on our program. With this said, we are excited to welcome Ms. Wilbrecht who will bring her own excitement and enthusiasm to the Swope Magnet in August!
Now a word from our teachers (please know that there is more Swope/GT/Magnet information following this section):
Mr. Bodensteiner
7th Grade: Students will have a small test on the War of 1812 next week.
8th Grade: The students will have a final exam in the form of an essay. They already know about and have been preparing.
Garden Club: Plants are growing and we expect to see an abundance of produce upon return this fall.
Mrs. Cabangon:
Hello Math Parents,
It has been an excellent year in the Swope GT department. I will miss all of your children next year. It has been a pleasure to instruct them in mathematics and get to know them through the last 1 to 2 years. I look forward to hearing about their success next year and the years to come.
Algebra 1: The Final Exam is scheduled for Wednesday, June 7th during the first three mods of the day.
Integrated II: The Final Exam will be split over two days. The first part of the Final Exam is scheduled for Monday, June 5th during the last 30 minutes of each class. The second part will be given during classes on Wednesday, June 7th.
Algebra II Honors: The Final Exam is scheduled for Wednesday, June 7th during the first three mods of the day.
Mrs. Hoy
Enrichment: Thank you so much for everyone’s contributions to our 7th Grade Field Day brunch and lunch! We are so fortunate to have such generous families. I’m looking forward to another great year with this group of hard-working students as they continue their middle school journey.
8th Grade ELA: Students turned in their Rocket Boys novel analysis—which they did an amazing job on!!! All that is left is their Literary Device Book as they prepare for the ultimate Literary Device Trivia Challenge on Tuesday!!!
8th Grade GT Challenges: Students are wrapping up the final project that finally answers the question we’ve been asking ourselves all year long, ‘Why is resilience crucial for success?’ They will have two class periods this week to continue to work on this project with a gallery walk during our last class on June 8th.
Thank you so much for sharing your children with me this past year. I’ve loved working with them and watching them grow. I look forward to hearing of their future successes!
Mrs. Leslie
Enrichment: I feel very lucky to have enjoyed your students in my enrichment all year AND look forward to having them again next year!
7th Grade Reading: This week in reading, we will enjoy student Animoto book productions! They have worked very hard on making the trailer entertaining and persuasive without summarizing. I’m hopeful some students will have a healthy summer reading list by the time we’re done watching!
Students have one last assignment to be turned in by Wednesday, June 7. Encourage them to be sure the Animoto book production reflection has been turned in.
7th Grade GT Challenges: This week in writing, we will continue to enjoy problem/solution presentations. I’m very proud of your students! Their interesting and skillfully prepared power point slides coupled with professional presentations have made them so engaging.
The next noredink quiz is due by Monday, June 5 and the 4th quarter reflection is due Tuesday, June 6!
I am so sad to see the 7th graders go! They move on to Mrs. Hoy for 8th grade. She will be very pleased with their excellent reading skills, amazing insight in Socratic discussions and strong writing skills! They have worked very hard this year and much growth has been made. Student writing portfolios will go home this week. Take a look at ALL they have accomplished!
Most of all, I will miss their energy, their quirky personalities, and yes even their many puns….Carl Azuz from CNN Student News, eat your heart out!
Mr. Shader
Science: We are still working on our “Geo-scenarios.” Our presentations of our research will be on Wed. 6/7.
English: We had time for a great Socratic Seminar on the existentialists (Sartre, Nietzsche, Heidegger, etc.) Our final discussion on Sophie’s World will be Wed., 6/7. Our Sophie’s World projects are due on that day as well.
GTC: We started work on our presentations of our community service projects. Please feel free to attend on Tuesday, June 6 starting at around 8:00 AM. The students signed up for specific presentation times so you may want to just attend for your son or daughter’s presentation.
History: The Empire Simulation Saga continues! We have a couple of groups who have worked their way from clan to tribe to village to city-state already. Lots of great activities as well accompany this simulation. We’re learning about all of the groups who had an impact during this time period.
Just a quick moment to let you know how great this year has been for me… this is a pretty special group because of their amazing abilities and big hearts. They have supported me throughout the year and for the most part, given their all on whatever we have worked on. It has been an honor and privilege to teach your sons and daughters and you should be very proud of them. I know I am! And as always, thank you so much for all your support and help this year!
Mrs. Taylor
7th grade Physical Science: This past week we finished SHARE, and next week we will be finishing up our solar cookers with a cook off on Wednesday! I am so proud of all of your students’ hard work throughout the year. It has been a wonderful year for me and I have enjoyed working with your kiddos! I am going to miss them next year!
8th Grade Biology: We will be finishing up SHARE at the beginning of the week and then will look at the results of the E.Coli lab we did at UNR. I am so proud of all of your students’ hard work throughout the year. It has been a wonderful year for me and I have enjoyed working with your kiddos! I wish them all the best in their high school years.
